Adopting A Rescued Animal

Making the choice to adopt an animal that has been rescued can mean dealing with issues that don't occur in normal pets. Rescued animals always have some kind of history that they bring to the family. Most of the issues are not serious, but may require additional patience and understanding.

Pets that have been rescued tend to come from homes where they were abused, neglected, or just plain dumped. Some of the memories from that treatment may take some time to overcome in your home. New sounds and activities may cause nervousness or jumpiness that you need to be understanding of. There is also a wide variety of things that may have been used to "discipline" or threaten them with. You may find that your new pet has odd reactions to things you didn't expect. The other possibility is that your rescued pet may have never lived in a home before. This may cause some anxiety over simple things like doorbells, vacuums, and toilets. Everyday may bring new experiences and challenges for you to work through with your new pet. When circumstances have brought rescued pets from good homes, you may simply have to teach new manners or routines with the basics already learned.

There is a great need for people with the patience and understanding that is necessary to bring a rescued pet into their home. Many animals are killed everyday just because there is no where else to place them. Most of these animals are loving and friendly and just need a chance.
