There is nothing like getting a new little puppy. Those of us who have a huge love for dogs can find it hard to refuse a cute little dog in a pet store. But before you rush right out and get a new puppy, there are some things to consider about where the puppies in the stores come from.
There are places called puppy mills. Puppy mills have been being exposed for quite a while now, as have their practices and techniques in raising puppies that they turn around and sell. Puppy mills are where people breed dogs simply for the sake of making a dollar. In puppy mills, there are poor practices in caring for the animals. They are viewed as being cruel, and having harsh living conditions for animals. They've been found to be abusive to the animals there; keeping them in extremely crowded conditions, not keeping up with the health of the animals, and giving them little to no food and water. Puppy mills are against the law. They are being exposed every day now, and the public is becoming more aware of puppy mills. People are refusing to buy pets that are born and bred in one. It is said that a lot of pet store pets are from puppy mills. It is not recommended that anyone purchase a pet from a pet store, because you do not always know what you are getting. They can be very sickly animals, and it is hard to tell until you get them home. What is recommended is that you purchase a pet directly from an individual, like a breeder, or from a humane society, or a dog pound.
Purchasing a pet is a big deal. If you do your homework, you can end up with a nice family pet.
