Russell Terriers were originally bred by Reverend Mr. John Russell. Reverend Russell loved to hunt. He began breeding the dogs to be good hunters and to catch foxes without hurting them. So, Jack Russell dogs do make good watchdogs. They are designed to bark at their prey. Even though they are very vocal, they do not usually bark without a good reason. They are very good with children but do not tolerate abuse of any kind.
Jack Russell dogs are medium-sized dog and are great family dogs. The dogs love to be exercised. They are very energetic, fun-loving pets. The dogs grow to an average of 10 to 12 inches high and 14 to 18 pounds in weight. They have been known to jump five feet easily. Be sure they are in a secure place with a high fence before letting them roam around in the yard.
Because of their endless energy, the Jack Russell must be exercised in some way every day of the week. Without daily exercise, these dogs become bored and will begin barking for no reason. If you have to leave them alone for a long period, they should be put in a dog house so things will not be destroyed upon your arrival back home.
Jack Russell dogs can have some health problems. This is something that you should learn about before purchasing one as a pet. Keeping their weight down can help with heart trouble and arthritis. Other disease associated with these puppies are cataracts, glaucoma, deafness, epilepsy, and some blood diseases. Before running out and buying the adorable Jack Russell, be sure that you are well-educated and well-equipped. It is feasible to have one no matter where you live. You just have to make some sacrifices.
