Jack Russell Terriers

The Jack Russell Terrier has been around for about 200 years. They originated in England and were originally bred as hunting dogs. They are faithful and intelligent. They do not always make great show dogs but may likely become your most loyal companion.

Jack’s are small in size, generally weighing up to 13 pounds and approximately 12 inches in length. Their body is slightly longer than tall, and their chest is moderately deep. They are mostly white with black, tan or brown markings. They typically live to 15 years of age.

Because they were bred for hunting, it is important that they receive plenty of outdoor activity. It is because of their natural instinct for hunting that they may not do well in households with other small animals. Jack’s know no fear which can make them difficult to handle at times. All Jacks require obedience training.

Even with a Jack’s abundance of energy, they are gentle in nature. They are good with older children but need to be watched carefully if they are around small children. Their playful nature has been called overwhelming at times, even by the most patient of owners. Being in the terrier family, Jacks enjoy playing games – inside or out. This dog is quick to solve problems and they love the challenge of getting out of confined spaces. It has been said that Jack Russell’s often outwit and outsmart their owners.

Jack’s are happiest in the company of their owner. If you’re looking for a little ball of energy that is guaranteed to be your companion, the JRT may be just what you’re looking for.
