The Jack Russell breed is a terrier that has been bred strictly for hunting and was first introduced by Reverend John Russell in Oxford, England in the 1800s. Russell was an avid hunter, and the dog was bred for fox hunting. Jack Russell Terriers are extremely intelligent and tenacious, and will go into a fox hole and bark and hold the prey at bay until the dog is called out, even if this takes days. Going into a fox hole requires a small chest, and superior flexibility to maneuver into the small holes in the earth. Their color is predominately white, with black or tan markings. The Jack Russell Terrier is a small breed with a big attitude. They range from ten to fifteen inches tall, and their coat can be either rough or smooth.
Although the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America requires that the breed remain a working class breed, the Jack Russell has become a very popular companion dog. The Jack Russell is not a couch potato, and will always be mentally and physically active. They are very assertive and determined to get their way. Keep in mind, they are trained to go after the fox, and stay there until the job is done. This trait can be a challenge for training as a companion dog. Providing the dog with active play and attention will help prevent unwanted behavior.
Jack Russell Terriers need to be carefully introduced to families with children. They are very territorial and may nip at strangers. Children under six are not old enough to understand how to play with a Jack Russell. The dog and children need to learn how to react to each other. Once familiarized with the family, they are very protective and loyal to their owners.
