Volunteering At Animal Shelters

Are you looking to contribute to society and have fun with something you like to do? Do you love animals? Have you considered volunteering at an animal shelter? Animal shelters need as much help as they can get. They need people to walk the dogs, play with the animals, water and feed them, clean the kennels, show tours through the shelter, stuff envelopes for mailing, run errands and help with educational material. Usually, anyone who deals directly with the animals would have an orientation and perhaps a background check as well as signing a waiver of liability.

There are many kinds of shelters. Some of the shelters have vets on site and operate a clinic for the public. Others, with limited space, try to find foster families for the pets until they can find a permanent home. You might like to become a foster parent for a pet.

Any volunteer will tell you that the job is rewarding. Those volunteering with animals are doubly blessed, first by the employees of the shelter, and then by wagging tails and happy sounds. You might never do any more than answer the phone, but in doing the mundane, you are still helping the animals by reducing stress level of the staff. Not all jobs are exactly what you want to do, but read up on it, call the animal shelters and ask if they accept volunteers. Be there when you say you will and ask specifically what you will be doing. Be a valuable member of their team and you might just get a promotion.
