The Border Terrier is one of the oldest breeds of terrier. They were originally bred in the hills of the border between England and Scotland, hence the name Border Terrier. They were bred for their ability to hunt, their agility and their speed. Throughout the years they have not only become a most loyal and efficient working dog but have also won our hearts as a lovable pet.
The Border Terrier has a tan, tan and brown, grizzle-colored or red coat. It is a double layer wiry coat that is weather resistant. It requires brushing often and should be cut twice a year. The Border Terrier has an otter-shaped head and is a relatively small terrier of medium bone structure. The Border Terrier's shape enables it to run very fast, even to keep up with horses. Its small stature makes it able to hunt close to the ground and agile enough to get in and out of holes.
The Border Terrier was bred for hunting fox and controlling rodents. It is a very active dog who loves the hunt. This breed was recognized for the first time by the American Kennel Club in 1930 and has won the most Earthdog titles of any breed. It is a tough and obedient dog that does very well with training and needs plenty of exercise. The Border's temperament makes it a great family dog that thrives on companionship and love. Being hunters in nature, they should not be trusted around rodent pets such as hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs. However, if they were raised with a cat they should be fine.
