Teach Your Kids To Help With Pets

Having a family pet is wonderful and takes an enormous amount of care, especially if all the responsibility is up to one person. Getting your child to help with pet care is easier than you think!

Children need to understand that if pets are not fed they will starve. As their parent, it is your responsibility to inform your child of the amount of care the pets need. Once this is done, make a care list for the pet as a family. This list will consist of chores that the whole family will be involved in, including your child. Allow your child to choose a chore the he or she would like to be in charge of. If your child picks a chore that is not age appropriate then you can either help him or her with it or explain why they cannot be responsible for the chore.

Many times, parents over look how responsible children can be. For instance, everyday you feed the fish and it is also your responsibility to clean the tank. Your 3 year old can help you feed the fish, just tell him or her what to do! As children get older, they become equipped to be responsible for different chores. If your child is 10, he or she can give the dog water and food each day.

When your child is responsible to do a certain chore, and has been doing a great job, it is important that reward them! By doing this, you will encourage them to keep on caring for the family pet.
