Jack Russell Terriers

Jack Russell Terriers were said to originate in 19th century England by a clergyman named Jack Russell. They were used to hunt small game, like foxes, and had to retrieve their target by digging them out of the den. These sturdy little dogs have adapted into the role of show dogs, as well as great house pets.

These tough little dogs seem to be on their toes all the time. They are devoted and obedient to their owners, yet they are absolutely fearless. They will take on a dog that is much bigger than they are without a second thought. Due to this type of thinking, if you are not stern with them and teach them that you are the pack leader, the Jack Russell will take over the house and the people in it. Give them an inch and they will take a mile, so be sure to train them early and think about getting an experienced trainer for them.

Many owners of this type of breed feel that if you only have a Jack Russell to show, then you are making them soft. They are a working class of dog and these owners feel that if they are not natural and scruffy, then they are not true terriers. The AKC does recognize them as a breed for show and the size of a Jack Russell should be no larger than a fox. The standard states that the chest span is no larger then 2 hands behind the shoulder blades. Any larger then this, and they may end up getting stuck in the fox hole.
