Border Terriers as Pets

Border terriers make excellent pets, but they do require some care and training to make them so. They were bred to be a working dog, on the border of England and Scotland, where they were used to follow the horses while on a fox hunt. They are very sturdy and energetic and love nothing better than a long walk.

They also can be very stubborn and will do what they want no matter what you do to stop them. They are creative in the many ways they can disobey you, especially if you turn your back to them.

They love to romp in the yard, but you have to be alert because they are excellent escape artists and if they see something they want to chase, chase they will, and no fence will hold them. If they are not jumping over, they will be digging under.

They are a loveable dog and like to be near their owner at all times. They especially enjoy traveling with their master, and particularly enjoy the looks of admiration they receive from passersby.

A Border terrier is a happy dog with twinkling eyes and a wagging tail. They are also characters, and can charm you into doing about anything they want you to. They get along okay with children, but are very possessive of their toys and might nip a child who wants to play with one. The best thing to do with your new Border terrier puppy is to get him into a training class as early as you can. This will help a great deal with his interaction with your family.
