Expectations of Adopting a Rescued Dog or Cat

It is a great thing for a person to adopt a rescued dog or cat. It is even a greater thing when one is fully prepared when they do adopt a rescued dog or cat. The one most important thing to expect when adopting is to expect the unexpected.

For example, a dog or cat might look healthy and happy when you pick him up to take him home, but even some healthy and happy pets do not like to ride in a vehicle. Yes, they could even throw up if they do not handle rides in vehicles very well.

Expect them to be nervous when you take them home. You do not know how many times this has happened in the past and how they were treated at other homes. What might be an exciting ride for you taking a new pet home could be a scary experience for the pet. When you get your new dog or cat home, remember to expect the unexpected. They might lose their appetite for a while, or they might seem starved, so be careful how much you feed them at one time. Be patient, it is just as important for your pet to get to know you as it is for you to get to know your pet. Being a rescued pet, you probably will not have knowledge of the pet’s history as far as discipline in the past or even worse, possible abuse in the past. Patient is a virtue and it is true with animals.
