Why Spay or Neuter Your Pet?

The problem of unwanted dogs and cats is steadily growing. The only way to insure that there are no pet litters that are unwanted is to be sure that pet owners act responsibly and have their pets spayed or neutered. Most people would be shocked to know that there are about 3 million cats and dogs each year that are euthanized in shelters. Many offspring of family pets become homeless because homes are not found for them. Shelters are constantly trying to find loving homes for the animals in their care, but there are just not enough people that are willing to take care of these victims.

The only way to insure that there are no unwanted litters from your dog or cat is to have the pet spayed or neutered. The procedure is permanent and can add years to the pets’ life by helping to prevent a number of health issues such as uterine infections, mammary cancer, testicular cancer or prostate disease.

The problem of unwanted pet litters is expensive. Taxpayers and private agencies spend millions of dollars every year for capturing, housing and eventually euthanizing these animals. Stray animals also pose a health hazard to society. This costs us all and is preventable. Many communities have drastically reduced the stray and unwanted pet population by adopting a proactive campaign of educating the community about the benefits of spaying and neutering.

The cost of spaying or neutering is far outweighed by the benefits of having your pet protected from unwanted litters. Often, financial assistance for the procedure is available. Be sure to check with your local Humane Society.
