Golden Retrievers as Pets

The Golden Retriever has a history dating back to the late 1800's. They were produced by a breeder, Lord Tweedmouth, living in Great Britain. He wanted a hunting dog that was skillful at tracking and retrieving waterfowl. He bred the now extinct water spaniel with a yellow dog -- this was well documented. The Golden Retriever was brought to the United States in the 1890s. From that point on, the Golden Retriever has evolved into two breeds, the American breed and the U.K. breed. The breed from the U.K., is shorter with a longer coat that's lighter than the American breed. The breed in America is taller and has kept the traits it was bred for.

The Golden Retriever does shed a lot. It has two coats, the undercoat is water resistant and keeps the dog warm in cold weather. The outer coat can be straight or wavy and is very soft. They can range in color from a light cream color, yellows, and a dark gold or even a copper shade. They have a broad head and muzzle. Their eyes are brown with a black nose. The adults develop a broad chest and a muscular build.

The Golden Retriever makes a great pet; this is self evident, because of its popularity. This dog loves people and it comes out in its demeanor. A trademark is the perpetual wagging tail, showing its playfulness. This dog is very intelligent, making it very easy to train. This dog has a sweet, gentle, disposition around children and people in general. Whether you want a hunting dog or a loyal family pet, the Golden Retriever is a great choice.
