Are Pets Good Therapy?

Can you imagine that your family pet may actually be good for you and your family's health? Research shows that pets have helped their owners achieve more fulfilling, selfless, and content lives. Although the type of pet that a person owns may vary, the end results of better health are almost always present as a result of pet ownership. Because of this, animals are used for many types of therapy, both mental and physical.

It has been found that persons who own dogs might be healthier than non-dog owners. For instance, a dog usually must be walked daily. Therefore, a dog may be good therapy for someone who needs to exercise to improve general health, but is not easily swayed in that direction. People who deal with life threatening illnesses such as high blood pressure, heat attacks and even cancer also tend to live longer and lead more productive lives because they know that their pets need them.

Similarly, the bond created between animals and humans can often provide help in other situations. Pets are excellent therapy for not only those with limited movement or other physical issues, but also mental and/or emotional challenges. Pets can provide a form of relaxation therapy as well. Some facing dental surgery seem to be more at ease if they observe an aquarium prior to their procedure. In like manner, those in full time care facilities such as nursing homes appear to be more communicative and restful when a pet comes for a visit.
